But…I tried it and it didn’t work!
How often have you heard someone say, “I tried it and it didn’t work!” or, “I’ve done everything…nothing works!”
Ww often forget that whatever we are currently doing that is not working well for us we have been repetitively doing, often for a very long time. These thoughts, emotions, and behaviors that we are practicing have become well-engrained patterns of thought, feelings, and behavior. They have become habits.
So, if we want to change something in our lives, it requires repetitively doing something DIFFERENT for at least as long as we have been practicing our current patterns. And because the old patterns have become fairly automatic and unconscious patterns, we must practice the new patterns of thought, emotions, and behavior INTENTIONALLY in order to create the change we want in our lives. This, of course, does not happen over-night! The general rule for changing a habit is that it takes a conscious intentional change in thought, feelings, and behavior on a regular basis, for at least 60 to 90 days to firmly establish the change into another thought, feeling, or behavioral pattern in our lives.
Therefore, having “tried” something a time or two will, of course, never work to create change. We tend to fall back into our default modes of living, thinking, feeling, and doing if we do not stay intentional and aware of doing things differently for the significant length of time necessary to create change.
Now that takes commitment and accountability! And it takes a certain measure of discipline, courage, and persistence. It is not for the faint of heart, nor for those who are not passionate about, or willing to create change in their lives.
